My two-year-old son, who is currently obssessed with trains, often asks to watch this video. Filmed in 1963 by director Geoffrey Jones, it’s set to a hypnotic, rumbling, pyschedelic blues soundtrack, with a rhythm that changes speed with the action on screen.
I catch something new every time I watch it, but what really strikes me is the images of the workmen shovelling snow and how well dressed they are. Shawl-collared sweaters, ties, scarves, newsboy caps… it’s a classy, timeless look. I even caught a glimpse of a tie or two.

As the internet makes the world seem smaller and smaller, sometimes it can be easy to forget the wealth of great talent that comes from your own neck of the woods. Or at least that is true for me and my neck of the woods.
Perhaps it is our long ass winter —stirring up feelings of isolation and feeding those dreams of far off places— that makes one overlook what is happening right under your frost bitten nose. And maybe it is that same long ass winter that has created such a hot bed for creativity. Whatever the causes, a new compilation series has been launched to both celebrate and shine a light on the musical going ons here. I don’t know who is responsible for the mix, I can just tell you that it is a great compilation, it is free and it it is just the tip of the Edmonton iceberg.
